8 Signs Of The Son Of God

John 20: 30-31 “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

I’m sure in the next few years we will begin to hear about some song of MIchael Jackson’s that never made it onto an album and was never recorded for the public. People will go crazy wondering why it never was released, some record company will claim the rights and it will be inserted into a collector’s set of songs from MJ and people will buy it.

Can you imagine if someone found a lost scroll that recorded works of Jesus (not the made up garbage from gnostics) but real stories of Jesus and His miracles, I don’t think we will find anything that we could consider valid or it would have been part of God’s word, but to think that Jesus did more than what was written by the gospel accounts. Even greater is that in John’s gospel what he does record and share is meant to do things for the life of a disciple.

1) Cause belief in Jesus as the Son of God
2) Because of that belief we have life in Jesus’ name.

This month at the River we will explore the Signs of the Son of God in the book of John. Today in our Worship Gathering it was the Water to Wine in Cana. The River Community Church’s Sunday morning gathering today was awesome! Jeromy (our worship pastor) did a great job with the band in leading us to sing songs of praise to God, Leigh Lynch did an amazing job of preparing hearts for communion. Even the sermon was pretty decent (I did it so I have to hold back from saying how truly fabulous it was…HA) Following the worship today we had our monthly potluck which we call FESTIVUS! Simply To Be Wanted

Yesterday I got up and was out the door before my son Levi got out of bed. I did not get home until after 5pm. All day long he would ask his mom, ‘when is daddy going to be home.’ She would reply ‘soon’ and he would moan. Finally in exasperation he cried out, “why is this happening to me”. Apparently he would not be satisfied until dad was home and we were snuggling. It feels really good to know he loves me this way. I love the greetings as soon as my car door opens in the driveway he runs down the sidewalk from the front door and he’s yelling “DAAAAADDDDDYYYYY!” Pants or no pants.

I was praying this morning and wondering if my time with God was like the love a child has for his daddy. Do I get excited to spend time with Him. Does my heart long to be near Him and do I wait on Him to come. I want to…I want the faith like a child’s. I long for God and Love Him and hope this pleases Him.

It’s funny because I know as Levi’s earthly father I am prone to make mistakes and even let him down sometimes, but my Heavenly Father is perfect and never let’s us down. Spend some time today with Abba just longing to be in His presence.

Unclean

I know! This picture is disgusting and you would never use this restroom or let your child go near it! It’s UNCLEAN! When you consider God’s Goodness and Holiness and Perfection and how He sent Jesus to Redeem the Unclean (you and me) it’s pretty Awesome. God cleans up our mess! It’s just as gross as the photo…more so! NOW, how would you like to clean this bathroom?

I’ve been working through the Gospel (good news) of Mark with some men on Wednesday mornings for the past 4 weeks. This week we are digging into chapter 5 which describes 3 miracles that Jesus performs. The miracles by themselves are pretty amazing, but dig a little deeper and the stories say so much more about God and His Son Jesus. The first story is about a man from Gerasenes (this makes him most likely a gentile/non jew). This man is possessed by many demons…probably hundreds and Jesus (who happens to be in a non-jewish area ministering to non-jews…did you know that?) cast the demons out into pigs (unclean animals) and then the people ask Him to leave because of the loss of pigs, missing the point that the man is now free!

The second story is about a woman who is…you guessed it…unclean. According to the Jewish law she had two things working against her…she was a woman (sorry) and she was menstruating for the last 12 years…this by law made her unclean. Yet Jesus heals the woman and even though the ‘unclean’ have touched Him, Jesus is kind and loving and discovers who touched Him to remind her that it was her faith, not His robe that has healed her.

The third story in this chapter is about a little girl who is dead (Jesus calls the dead sleeping which is a whole other blog). Jesus heals the dead girl and brings her to life with the gentle command ‘Talitha cumi’ – ‘Little girl, I say to you, arise.’ Touching a dead person in OT Law…guess what that is…UNCLEAN. Do you get the feeling that Jesus is shifting the focus off of our ability to be clean onto His ability to redeem, restore and resurrect?

Does your life feel “unclean”? Give it to Jesus!

Dive! Dig! Do!

If you have ever sat frozen by the process and the tasks in front of you. Unable to act because you are overwhelmed by the length of your list. Don’t have enough time to finish the project, and not sure you have the perfect plan? This is for you (and definitely for me). DIVE…just jump in and begin. Need to write the blog, but struggling to write something profound…just write. Sermon page blank and so is your mind? Start typing. Home project been sitting on the Honey DO board for over a year, fire up the tools and DIVE in!

We started a Men’s Bible Study on Wednesday mornings and instead of spending countless hours and meetings trying to figure out what study, scripture or book we should use, I JUMPED. I picked the gospel of Mark, we dive every week, reading a whole chapter and experiencing the power of God’s Word. Many things like this never get off the ground because we are afraid to jump and trust the unknown questions below the surface of the waters. Dive!

DIG! I will use an example of failing for this next action. I planned to plant a garden this past spring. I had drafted pictures of the raised beds and their placement in the backyard. I had a plan for irrigation and fighting away the rabbits and even made a list of the fresh home grown veggies I would grow. I had a great plan, but I never set the shovel to the ground…it remained unfallowed ground. DIG. I have a project on my to do list that is 28 days overdue. AAAAHHHHHHH! How much time have I wasted just reading about the project and never digging in and getting it done? This Blog is for me too! This advice is not original to me…in the book ‘Rework’ it encourages abandoning your reservations and immobility and diving and digging into whatever is waiting for your action. Seth Godin, Michael Hyatt and John Maxwell would all agree, things don’t just get done, we have to DIVE, DIG and DO! Finally I can check off my to do list for this week, “BLOG, Just write something…anything!” DIVE+DIG+DO=DONE! Have a Blessed Day!

Heaven is WHERE the heart is?

Okay this is me being as transparent as I can be. I’m writing this message on Heaven. I love God, Jesus and truly desire to be in Heaven – ONE Day. I know it will be amazing. I know it will be forever better than anything here on earth. I know my citizenship is in heaven and not here on earth. Where I am torn is how much I love the things in my life…now…here on earth. My wife Stacey. How do I desire to go to heaven when I experience such joy in being with her, loving her and holding her near to me? My boys, Levi and Joel. How do I look forward to the day when I am in heaven and no longer with them? So where does that leave me? I believe it leaves me on a journey to understand more fully the hope of heaven and it’s promises. That is what I will be preaching about for the next three weeks at The River Community Church. How can Heaven surpass the allure of the Good things here on Earth?

Take a screen shot and paste it in your favorite image editor and save it as a jpeg or use it in your powerpoint/keynote/propresenter. Print it and do a word search game or whatever. Getting Things Done…Less Stress and Greater Daily Results…

I am on a journey. It is the path of productivity. It began with listening to a phenomenal audio book by David Allen called “Getting Things Done”. The principles in this book have the potential to transform you into a more productive and on task person. I desperately needed this life lesson. I have paired this with a program designed for macs called ‘things’. (Photo of Screenshot)

You may ask…do I need this right now? I would say if you have many task, struggle with focusing to get things done, overwhelmed with your to do list, cloud your brain power with the same task you have yet to do…several times a day. Then YES you NEED to DO THIS!

Step one – download or buy the book/audio book and consume.
Step two – develop your system for inbox, today, next, schedule and projects.
Step three – take the time and do the work for productivity (we get one life for Him, make haste).

JESUS IS EVERYTHING

The Preeminence of Christ
Colossians 1:15-23 ESV

[15] He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. [16] For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. [17] And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. [18] And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. [19] For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, [20] and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
[21] And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, [22] he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, [23] if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Jesus – Highest! Greatest! Lord of All! He is the image of the invisible God – meaning when God said to man don’t create any graven images – He intended to show His true self through Jesus. Our idea or image would miss the mark. It would be terrible, but Jesus – ALL THINGS. Al things created through HIM and FOR HIM…in HIM ALL THINGS Hold Together! Wow. Paul is saying without question Jesus Christ is it. We (general public) spend so much time debating who Jesus is and if He raised from the dead, and if he was the Son of God and for Paul and the recipients of this letter IT’s NO QUESTION! Not just IT but in Charge of all of IT and Before IT and He HOLDS IT and IT is under HIS Authority. He made It and than reconciled IT through the blood on the Cross!

STABLE and STEADFAST – Not Shifting from the HOPE of the GOSPEL that you heard. That Gospel is the message for all the world to be able to face the world, face life and come away saying OH Christ fully you are everything! EVERYTHING! Thank you Jesus

May we not be teetered by the false gospels and hopes of this world.

Sunday Morning River Reflection

I wanted to start writing a response to the Sunday Morning Worship Gatherings at the River each Sunday afternoon/evening. However I played ‘Orca’ ball for 7 hours yesterday and delayed this until Monday morning. We have been in a series of teachings entitled ‘Breaking Free’ and focused on Freedom from Despair and Grief. It is amazing how God will work through the circumstances and difficulties of others to minister to His people.

Some of the Thoughts from yesterday morning.

1) Preaching about grief is difficult when you are dealing with such a personalized topic and each person comes with a different perspective and degree of struggle.

2) As I taught yesterday I felt a lot of fatigue and distraction and felt like the enemy wanted to harass me as I was teaching.

3) I prayed God would be glorified in spite of me and that I would not come with clever words but through His Spirit reach into the hearts and minds of our people.

4) Tears flowed and people grew through the comfort and word of God yesterday and the prayers of His saints. I was blessed by the worship yesterday.

Who Will Rise Up?

I’m sure it has been something on the minds of most people over the last week. Devastation…how do you come back from what the people of Haiti have been through the past eight days? I see the pictures and part of me wonders what would I cling to? If it was part or all of my family in the rubble how would I cope? Much of me thinks, if i’m honest…”I don’t think I could make it.” I would cry out to God and weep and mourn and probably be frozen in my grief. I mean, I’m a thousand miles away right now and many times this week I have found myself wondering, “Why God?” I’m brokenhearted for the orphaned children. The widows. The parents who can’t find their own. I keep praying…’Oh God, what can I do?’ I can give money (not much, but some). I can pray. I have cried so much this week just hurting inside for the pain that radiates from this small, poor and now devastated country. Only God gets us through things this tragic. I’m convinced it will be the ministry of the Bride of Christ that will have the greatest influence on piecing back the lives of the Haitian people. I believe it will be the Church that will rise up and have the greatest impact for healing the hearts of the people in Haiti.
I’ve come across a organization that is raising money to rebuild the churches in Haiti as quickly as possible. www.churcheshelpingchurches.com. Their belief is – fix the churches (not just buildings, but pastors and resources) so they can begin to heal a nation. I think they are right. Healing will come through the Spirit of believers holding one another up and standing together. Pray for the effort to get churches doing what churches do in Haiti and helping this community get restored. It will take many years and many believe it will never happen, but I believe God will be glorified as God’s children pour life into the people and our church in Haiti.
